It is said that ‘Englishman’s home is his castle.’ And in days past it certainly was. A mans home was regarded as his safest refuge and no one may enter unless invited.  This was defined in 1763 by the then Prime Minister, Pitt the Elder, who explained "The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the crown.
