Valentine's Day Gifts
Saint Valentine’s Day, 14th February, is a day set aside for the celebration of love, when lovers declare their love for each other with words and gifts.
St Valentine was a Roman man martyred during the reign of Emperor Claudius II of Rome. Claudius ran a series of bloody and unpopular military campaigns and found it increasingly difficult to recruit young men into the army. Thinking that the men did not want to leave their wives, Claudius banned all engagements and marriages. Legend has it that St Valentine was put to death on the 14th of February because he aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples in defiance of Claudius’s decree. St Valentine’s name became synonymous with love and lovers when, in 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine. In Ancient Rome, February 14th, Feast of Lupercalia Eve, was a holiday to honour Juno, the Queen of the Roman Gods and the Goddess of women and marriage. On this day the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. The young men would draw a girl's name from the jar and they would then be partners for the duration of the festival. The early Christian Church in Rome, in an attempt to do away with the pagan element in this feast, turned the celebrations into St Valentine’s Day.
